Taking Area Measurements

Along with Linear distance measurements, Bullclip users can also measure the area of spaces on a drawing or document based on the calibrated page scale. There are currently two types of Area Mesurement tools available: a Rectangular Area measurement and a Polygon Area measurement.

The default page scale is simply 1:1 which is based on the PDF page size. If you are working with a drawing/document that has a defined page scale, be sure to calibrate a page scale before using the measurement tools.

To use the Rectangular Area Measurement Tools:

  • Open the Measurement tools from the Tool Bar.
  • Select the Rectangle Area Measurement tool (the last icon from the options).
  • Set a colour and thickness for your Area Measurement annotation. You can even turn on the Fill properties and set a fill colour for your Area Measurement.
  • Open the Scale drop down menu and select a page scale. Click here to learn how to create a scale.

  • As I recently created a scale based on the length of the cut-out, I've selected the 1:100 (Isabelle White) scale from the list.
  • When all properties and scales have been set, drag a rectangle over the area you wish to measure. You will notice the Rectangular Area measurement will update as the size of the rectangle changes.

The Measurement Label for Area Measurements appears at the bottom of the area annotation. This label position is the only option.... for now.

To use the Polygon Area Measurement tool:

  • Open the Measurement tools from the Tool Bar.
  • Select the Polygon Area Measurement tool (the third icon from the options).
  • Set a colour, thickness and scale for your Area Measurement annotation.

  • As I did earlier, I've selected the 1:100 (Isabelle White) scale from the list.
  • When all properties and scales have been set, you can start drawing a polygon around the area you wish to measure.
  • Draw a Polygon by selecting points around the area and closing the polygon off at the end, as opposed to dragging a box like the Rectangular Area Measurement tool.

  • Unlike the Rectangular Area Measurement, Polygon Area Measurement annotations can have the vertices shifted around and the area measurement updated with them.

Note: Polygon vertices cannot be crossed through itself. The Polygon measurement tool will prevent you from drawing invalid Polygons.
